Phantom Injury
In the last Washington Wizards' preseason game, starting shooting guard, Gilbert Arenas, went public about himself faking an injury for his teammate, Nick Young. Arenas orginally said he couldn't play because of a lingering knee injury, so management started backup Nick Young. After the game, Arenas told the media that he sat out so Young could get more playing time. I do not agree with what Arenas did. As a paid professional ball player, you should not try to fake an injury to not play in the game, and still get paid for it. I can see that Arenas did a favor for fellow teammate Young, but why would you tell that to the media? I think Arenas want all of the attention on him, after Young put up over 20 points in his start. A little advice for Arenas in the future, don't tell the media that you are faking an injury because it will go public!

I mean yes it was a nice gesture so that Young would get some playing time, but I really do not feel as if faking an injury, getting paid for lying, and then alerting the media was the right call of action. In a way, I feel as if this gave Arenas a bad name and who is actually going to believe him next time he is really injured. Also, I mean you lie once, you are bound to do it again. It makes you really wonder if his other injuries were all they were talked up to be or whether he was faking those for other reasons as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I have always thought Arenas was a very selfish attention getting person. If the spotlight isnt always on him then he isnt happy. Sure its a nice gesture to give a guy who will probably play a lot anyways due to the fact thats its a PRE season game. But, the fact that you had to go public with it? Its a little sad and yet just another justification for me to say Arenas is a selfish player and person and that isnt changing a whole lot. You would think after the locker room incident with the gun pulling he would calm down and start to realize he needs to shape his image and not sharpen it more. I have a feeling it will be another media frenzy with Arenas this NBA season.
